No Toilet Paper? Here Are Some Septic-Safe Alternatives

The fast spread of COVID-19 has brought concern into the lives of many. Fortunately, a national toilet paper shortage doesn’t have to be one of those concerns. If you find yourself standing in front of an empty toilet paper shelf at the grocery store, don’t panic. Instead, try these septic-safe alternatives.

First Things First: What NOT to Use

Before you choose your alternative, allow us to keep you from a few unhappy mistakes. Even in a pinch, never use the following items as toilet paper. (Trust us, you will regret it!)

1. Paper Towels

Since paper towels are designed to retain water rather than dissolve, flushing them is one of the quickest ways to clog your system. If you flush enough of them, your pipes might even burst.

2. Napkins

Napkins are slightly better than paper towels, but still not a good idea. Like paper towels, the likelihood of clogging your pipes is high.

3. Baby Wipes

While some types of wipes are septic-safe (more on that in a minute), the average baby wipe brand is not. If you want to use baby wipes, dispose of them in the trash can.
Additionally, you should never use your septic system to dispose of items like diapers or feminine products. A good rule of thumb: if it isn’t specifically designed to be flushed down your toilet, don’t flush it. Otherwise, you’re going to end up in a situation that is both unpleasant and expensive.

Septic-Safe Alternatives to Toilet Paper

So, the toilet paper shelf is empty, and you can’t use paper towels. What now? Fortunately, you have several options to choose from.

1. The Bidet

Granted, quarantine is not the ideal time to rip out your plumbing and start from scratch, but the bidet is cool nevertheless. A bidet entirely eliminates the need for toilet paper, as a soothing stream of fresh water does all the cleaning for you. Handy, right?

2. Reusable Cloth Toilet Paper

If you don’t mind a little extra laundry, reusable cloth toilet paper is easy, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. Just don’t forget what you’re using and accidentally flush it.

3. Dissolvable Wet Wipes

Again, the majority of wet wipe brands are not meant to dissolve in water, so make sure you purchase a brand that is legitimately flushable. Some internet research or a call to your plumber will tell you everything you need to know about which brands you can trust.

4. Shower

No time or money to install a bidet? A shower does the trick. Fortunately, there are few rules in quarantine, so you can take as many showers a day as you want to. Just watch your water bill.
